Our Prince’s Trust Achieve learners are at Ty Hafan – the hospice for children in Wales today. They are carrying out an up-cycling project to raise money to help Ty Hafan provide care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families throughout Wales. Well done Team. You should be very proud of yourselves
Week Commencing 14th August 2017 – 18th August 2017
Prince’s Trust Team 10 and Prince’s Trust Achieve Team (Summer School) will be carrying out a Community Project from August 14th – 18th with Ty Hafan – the hospice for children in Wales.
The project will involve up-cycling furniture and clothes so that they can be sold in the many Ty Hafan Charity Shops. All the money raised through the sale of products goes back into supporting Ty Hafan.
Our Prince’s Trust Teams will be up-cycling by helping collect, prepare, paint and make the items ready for sale.
Teams are busy thinking of ways to fundraise in. Materials used during the up-cycling project will cost around £200. The Teams are aiming to fundraise for this amount over the next 2 weeks.
Fundraising activities include:
- Bag packing at Waitrose Supermarket, Barry on Friday August 4th
- Sponsored walk from Barry – Cardiff Bay August 8th
The Community Project week will involve:
Painting furniture – preparing (cleaning any dirt from surface), painting (with chalk paint) and waxing furniture
Painting wooden plaques with chalk paint (may include some stencilling)
Picture frames – upcycling by painting or using the decoupage technique of applying paper and PVA glue.
Re-using jeans/denim – fabric painting the denim and making into festival shorts, small bags
T Shirt bags – turning old t-shirts into simple shopping bags by re-cutting and sewing
Bunting prep – preparing fabric (ironing) and cutting out bunting triangles
Garlands – cutting co-ordinating strips of fabric and tying together to form a fabric garland
Sorting fabric – categorising fabric pieces (by colour or design)
Fabric letters – using a template cut out fabric letters
Teams will also visit the Recycling Distribution Centre in Bridgend.
Diggin’ for gold @ the RDC!
“Our RDC services all 31 of our shops, offers a collection service for select areas and items, serves as a drop-off point for lots of donors and also stores lots of our goodies for our events and online store.
Volunteers at the RDC are essential to keeping our retail network supplied with good quality stock in a timely manner.
Volunteers will work in groups to organise stock and sort the thousands of items that come through the warehouse. All groups will be asked to keep back items that they think could be worth more online and the warehouse manager will be able to provide a guiding hand with this.
Each bag sorted is worth around £30. A benchmark for a day is about 65 bags sorted. Therefore, a volunteer group at the RDC raises almost £2,000”
Teams will also be involved in Seminar’s/Talks with Ty Hafan staff
A series of talks from staff members about key roles in the organisation. Practical teaching and skill sharing, as well as advice on how to pursue similar careers.
